Obituary for Delbert Gabbert

Delbert Eldean Gabbert was born July 28, 1927 in Worth County, Missouri to Dale and Iris Gabbert. He passed away May 27, 2021 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Delbert grew up on his family farm near Oxford, Missouri. He attended and graduated from Grant City High School, served in the Army Air Corp at the end of WWII, and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.

Delbert was born into a large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Iris, his daughter Lisa Jindra, brothers Keith, Berniel, Gale, Royce, John and his sister Sharon Foster.

He is loved and survived by Carol, his wife of 59 years, his daughters Melanie Gabbert, Janet Vaughn, and her husband Denny, and his sisters Joyce Smetzer and Nelda Reynolds. Delbert is also survived by his grandchildren Clayton, Dylan, and Jack Jindra, Alixandria Jacob, and Michael, Lily, and Booker Gabbert along with 8 great-grandchildren.

Delbert believed in hard work and spent years on the family farm, raising livestock and working for the post office and his church. Delbert loved God, his family, and horses (we think in that order). Delbert was a man of deep faith and served as an elder for many years at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Bedford Iowa.

Delbert was a man of few words, and one could know more about him by how he spent his time and energy. He spent his time putting his girls on ponies, breaking, showing, training, and breeding horses. These things brought him joy and he kept and rode his horses till he was 88. He enjoyed his years as a Grant City Saddle Club member and participating in horse shows, trail rides and parades. Delbert loved his country, always making sure he had a flag on a flagpole and contributing to organizations serving veterans. He was a kind and usually patient man who loved his family. He was an indulgent grandfather, giving his time and attention to his grandchildren, teaching them about love of God and country. He is deeply loved and will be deeply missed.

A private graveside memorial service and inurnment will be held in June at the Oxford Cemetery, and a family memorial will be held in July.
