Herman Eugene “Gene” Via, age 70, Sheridan, Missouri died Friday, June 9, 2017 at his home.

Gene was born October 11, 1946 in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the son of the late Roy Woodrow and Vivian Mae (Lockhart) Via.

Gene attended Macon High School, Macon, Missouri. After high school Gene entered the United States Navy in 1964 -1970, and a second tour from 1984 -1998 serving a total of twenty years before retiring with the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. With a rank of Petty Officer 1st Class Gene was stationed aboard the USS Tripoli during the Vietnam War and served as a Heavy Equipment operator.

Gene’s memberships include; American Legion Post 515, Sheridan, Missouri and the National Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roy Glendon, Bill, Roy Edwin Via; and one sister Kathey Louise Moore.

Gene’s survivors include; two daughters, Samantha Kerwin, Nemaha, Nebraska, Jennifer (Ryan) Giese, Lincoln, Nebraska, one step-son Mike (Amanda) Myers, Edwards, Missouri; two brothers Roland (Dorothy) Smith, Macon, Missouri and Kenneth Paul Smith, Clarence, Missouri; five grandchildren Trevor Montanelli, Seth Kerwin, Kylee Myers, Colton Giese and Braxton Giese; and one great-grandson Henry Montanelli.

Mr. Via’s body has been cremated.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 23, 2017, at the Sheridan Christian Church, Sheridan, with the family receiving friends from 10-11:00 prior to the services. Pastor Jeff Blaine Officiating. Full Military Honors will be provided by the Missouri Honor Program, and the Worth County Memorial VFW post 3123.
